For independent-school bursars · ISBA Annual 2026
The SAR week, recognised. And a tool that respects the way you actually do this work.
You finished the parent SAR with the broad scope at five-to-six on Thursday, between a complaints meeting and a governors' briefing. You did it in Adobe Acrobat with a stopwatch and the school's MIS open in a second window. The 30-day clock cost you sleep last week. That is the caseload SureMatters is built for. Not the press-release version — the Tuesday-and-Thursday-afternoon version, the one that fits between everything else on the desk.

What we heard you talking about this week
- Broad parent SARs. "Everything you hold about my child" — pastoral notes, behavioural incidents, photographs, MIS extracts, registers, House-staff correspondence, historical emails. Sometimes years of records.
- Ex-pupil SARs that arrive years late. Sometimes adversarial. Records often in the archive, on a former Housemaster's laptop, in a closed Google Vault, on an ageing on-prem fileshare. The boundary between "your data" and "another pupil's data" is fine-grained.
- Complaint-disclosure that intersects with SAR. Where the procedural complaint and the data right of access meet. The audit trail has to hold up to the parent's solicitor and to the regulator.
- Safeguarding-disclosure requests. From police, social services, and — in England — the LADO. Narrow scope, high sensitivity. The decisions log matters.
- The fee-and-bursary boundary. Pupil-specific finances stay in scope; the school's general accounts do not. Line-level entries naming the pupil inside an institutional document stay in scope and surface as exceptions during triage.
